The project ‘The British at Leisure’ comprises a photographic record of the huge and varied number of  the leisure activities carried out by the British public.  It is a snapshot designed to provide the flavour of these activities.  The photographs were taken throughout 2023 and cover a variety of typical events and places of visit.   They are grouped into series of images, and these groupings are indicated in red lettering below:

1.  Participation events

These include the Notting Hill Carnival, the Maidenhead Lantern Festival, the Cookham Gravity Grand Prix and the Marlow Funfair.

2.  Viewing and walking in
Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Snowdonia National Park, the Great Orme in Llandudno and Puffin Island in North Wales are shown here.

3.  Visiting
Stately Home and Castles

These include the National |Trust properties of Hatchlands Park in Surrey, the Vines in Hampshire and Bodnant House in North Wales.  Castles include Harlech Castle, Caernarfon Castle and Beaumaris Castle.  Finally included are the toytown village of Portmeirion and the interesting gallery Plas Glyn y Weddw in North Wales.

4.  Relaxing in
Gardens and admiring spectacular plants and flowers.

Gardens in Bodnant House Garden, John Milton’s house in Chalfont St. Giles and the gardens in the aforementioned National Trust are show.

5.  Viewing
Art in all of its forms

Particularly prevalent are vernacular sculptures.

6.  Visits to
Country Shows

Country shows have a diverse range of activities including animal breeding competitions, country pursuits, stalls and re-enactments..  Shows at Thame, Newbury and the Chiltern Open Air Museum are shown.
